My Radiohead fan status definitely faded post Kid A. At its peak, I used to get as close the the speaker as possible when the album played — and just stand there and sing back into the speaker. (Something like “Is this really happening? happening? happening?”). As if my voice could travel through the speaker’s diaphragm into the stereo and then somehow form a Thom Yorke mirror in the living room of my apartment. After that… I mean the music was still good, but it ceased to resonate with me the same way. I ceased trying to form Thom Yorke mirrors. It was no longer the music I listened to on long night time bus rides through New York State. I used weird adjectives to describe Amnesiac and HTTT like summery and speakery
I wasn’t expecting that sweeping feeling. Alas, I’ve been swept. I was expecting to download it and listen to it and have it get me through my day. I wasn’t expecting choice lyrics to latch on to the part of my brain that repeats things over and over when I go sleeping. (Aside: This part of my brain is usually reserved for to-do lists and regrets). But it is. (Something like “A videotape, A videotape”)

The new adamvarga.com is here. I wanted to have a simple clean website that stays current with whatever I happen to be interested in / involved with / curious about / looking at / doing / thinking / wanting. To be honest, I think I went a little API happy. The front page pulls from a bunch of services that I use, so I no longer have to actively do anything on my site. A big shoutout to the Blueprint CSS framework for making this redesign unbelievably easy.

I just noticed this image on the hearts’ front page:

My friend Rooney Tunes is hiking 1000 kilometers through Australia. He’s been out there for almost 2 months, and I think he’s almost done. I’m loving this entry from his trail journal:
I spent almost all of the hike today going through my entire life and trying to pick out as many memories as I could. I smiled and laughed and cried, it was a real emotional roller coaster of a day. It made me realize how I often go back in time in my mind to think of memories so that I won’t forget them. Not really the best way as then they’re still just fleeting thoughts. So I think I’m going to buy a separate journal and record as many strong memories as I can in as close to chronological order as I can. It’ll be very brief, no story telling, just a sentence or two per memory. Enough to spark the full emotion later in life. A sort of condensed diary of ‘my life thus far’. With blank pages left throughout so I can add to it in the future, as things come to me.

Note to self: Be sure to drink at least half of your coffee before the bus hits the bumpy part of Flushing Avenue. The last think you want to do is spill coffee on your shirt in the morning and stare at those stains all day.

If you’re into “not-unfunny” content… or have a desire to know whats going on in the world, without getting all depressed… I invite you to check it out.

A boy scout troop is using TrailPhone.net, the service I built to let Appalachian Trail hikers record audio journals from telephones, to keep track of their extended hike in the woods. This is the first real-world use of the service. Check it!
